Development of Tourism in Nepal

The tourism of Nepal faced lots of ups and downs. Nepal was closed for foreigners till 1950. Only some of the tourist visited Nepal under the strict permission of Rana Regime. Based upon assumptions it can be said that first tourist started coming to Nepal was only after the end of 104 years autocratic rule of Rana regime. After Rana Regmi, the first road system was built in the year 1950 that connect some of the Nepal’s cities with Indian border in the south. Then the flow of tourist started to coming in Nepal slowly mainly for mountaineering purpose. Therefore, 1950’s is considered the most important period in Nepal’s tourism development. During this period World’s famous 14 over 8000m peaks 7 out of 8 in Nepal were conquered. Hence, mountain tourism played the vital role in the overall tourism sector as tourism in Nepal started with mountain tourism.

In 1955, foreigners were officially welcomed by Nepal by providing tourist visa. Before, the visas were used to be provided from India by East India Company under the supervision of British Government. One of the major event happened during 1956, coronation of Late king Mahendra. A large number of foreign dignitaries were invited to this event which exposed Nepal on tourist’s eye as major tourist destination internationally. The first private airline “Himalaya Airways” began its operations during this year. In order to flourish the tourist economy, national tourism council had also set up five year tourism development plan under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce during this year.

In 1957 Nepal Transportation Department was established to paved the way of Civil Aviation and in 1958 Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation (RNAC) now Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) came in operation. Nepal became member of International Union of Official Travel Organization. In late 1960’s and 1970’s hippies started to flow in Nepal and became the major source of advertising and promoting Nepal as a tourism sector. During 70’s Nepal became safe tourism destination due to its perfect climate, peaceful place and unique cultures. Nepal foster its tourism sector at turns of time and in 1998 Nepal Tourism board (NTB) was established to promote tourism sector. Officially it can be said that Nepal has fully owned the ownership of the tourist trade. To strengthen the tourism sector, Nepal celebrated “Visit Nepal 98”. 1999-2005 was known as Dark Period of Nepal as many undesirable events happened which led Nepal to dark corner. It has affected Nepal in several different ways and tourism is centred only in city area. With the rise of the sun in 2006, peace agreement was signed between Nepal government and moist and in 2011 Nepal celebrated Nepal Tourism Year. Since then tourism slowly started picking up and now became one of the top tourist destination.
